Economic snapshot

Baseline read-out

Generated from the figures for the selected area against the England benchmark.

    How the area ranks

Against the city-region and national benchmarks.

    Economy & productivity

Output (GVA), productivity, household income and the business base. Productivity is shown as GVA per job (workplace output divided by total jobs) and indexed to England = 100.

    Employment by sector

Share of jobs in each broad industry vs England, with location quotient (LQ > 1 = more concentrated than the national average).

    Economic comparator table

Liverpool City Region and constituent authorities against North West and England.

    Labour market

Employment, economic activity and inactivity, unemployment, the claimant count, jobs density and earnings — the resident/workplace pay gap signals the quality of locally based jobs.

    Activity status (16–64)

Employment, unemployment and inactivity vs benchmarks.

    Earnings: live vs work here

    Median full-time gross weekly pay.

    Labour market comparator table

    People & skills

Population scale and age structure, the working-age base, and the skills profile (qualifications) that underpins productivity and the labour supply.

    Age structure

    Qualifications (16–64)

Share of working-age residents by highest qualification vs benchmarks.

Deprivation — Indices of Deprivation 2025

Neighbourhood (LSOA) deprivation across the city region. Colour shows the national decile (1 = most deprived 10% in England). Switch the domain to see what drives deprivation locally.

    Deprivation summary

    Domain breakdown

% of each authority's neighbourhoods in the most-deprived 10% nationally, by domain.

      Method notes

      • Geography. The study area is Liverpool City Region (the combined authority of Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, Wirral and Halton), benchmarked against the North West and England.
      • City-region totals. Where ONS does not publish the combined authority directly (GVA, population, business counts), the city region is the sum of its six authorities; rates are recomputed from those components.
      • Productivity. GVA per job = workplace GVA ÷ total jobs, computed identically for every area. The official GVA per filled job / per hour worked is published only at ITL2/ITL3 level; this LA-level proxy is labelled as such.
      • Earnings. Median gross weekly pay for full-time workers. Resident analysis is where workers live; workplace analysis is where the jobs are. The city-region figure is population/jobs-weighted from its authorities.
      • Deprivation. IoD2025 is measured relative to all 33,755 English neighbourhoods (LSOAs, 2021 boundaries). Authority summaries use the population-weighted average score and national rank of average score among 296 lower-tier districts. Deprivation is England-only, so the North West and England carry no rank.
      • Sectors. Employment is aggregated from detailed SIC subclasses into the 18 standard ONS broad industry groups; the location quotient compares each area's sector share to England.
      • Disclosure. Survey-based figures (APS, ASHE, BRES) are estimates subject to sampling variability and rounding; small differences should be treated with caution.
